Party Planner
A great way to reconnect with former work colleagues or long lost alumni is to host a holiday luncheon. Find a restaurant with a private dining room and book a table for at least sixteen--you want some critical mass. Send out an e-mail invite, the restaurant will do a set menu and let
everyone know the cost per person. Throw in a few silly hats and get everyone to bring an inexpensive secret Santa gift. Watch the fun begin!
Too busy in December? Make it your 2008 Connector’s Lunch Launch. Start an annual tradition. |

THE ‘A’ WORD
When I speak to women’s
groups I often start off by making this declaration: “I am ambitious.” This is not a word women use that often. We use softer words: ambitious is goal-oriented word. Strong. Clear. But I am not just ambitious for myself. I am also ambitious for other women: to mentor, to share knowledge, to help us all succeed.

Show up!
Go to all the events you are invited to
this holiday season even if you have
more than one event on a single night.
Even if it’s a brief appearance, always
seek out your host to say hello. |
No coal from
the man in red
Make it a practice to always rescue
wallflowers. That way there will be no
lump of coal in your stocking! |
The buddy system
If the idea of all this networking gives
you hives, take a tag teammate to
events. If the invite says bring a guest
to the event, do so. |
Low tech touch
If you’ve stopped sending greeting
cards, start again. If you send cards,
why not set a goal to double the
number this year? And, a personal
greeting or note goes a long way. |
Be curious
Go to events with the idea that you
simply want to meet some new
people--no pressure. Practice Positive
Networking: it’s not all about you; it’s
discovering what you can do for
others. And remember, if you are
feeling a bit nervous, so are most of the
people in the room. |
Tis the Season
Here are a few ideas to keep your
spirits high. Take the time to watch
funny movies with friends, play zany
games with your family or encourage
older folks to tell their fascinating
stories of Christmases past. Pick up the
phone, call long distance friends and
hear them "smile" when they
recognize your voice. |

UNICEF is working to have every child in Africa sleep under a
bed net, thus stopping thousands of needless deaths from
malaria. Every $10 collected will purchase a bed net for a child
in Africa. To quote from Spread the Net: "It’s all about
networking." So in the spirit of Positive Networking, learn about
it, buy it, pass it on, be a part of it.
We are all connected. Spread the net. |

The Women’s Leadership Circle is a community of women leaders who are members of The Vancouver Board of Trade. It is designed to deliver programs, speakers, topics and other events that will help The Board of Trade
be more engaged with women in the community and to help women feel more engaged with The Board.
It allows women to be involved in the social and political issues The Board tackles, as well as the networking and the
wonderful relationship-building activities The Board provides.
The WLC is open to all 5,700 members of The Vancouver Board of Trade, one-third of which are women. Almost
half of all The Board’s new members currently joining are women.
