The Vancouver Board of Trade and the Chartered Professional Accountants of BC hosted a federal post-budget briefing at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver on Feb. 14 with The Honourable James Moore, Canada's Minister of Industry.
Moore's presentation reinforced the government’s message that Canada is one of the strongest economies in the G7. Canada has performed better than most G7 economies during the global economic downturn and recovery process; only the U.S. has fared better in terms of economic growth.
Some highlights from Economic Action Plan 2014 that are of interest to British Columbians include:
- $222 million in physics research at UBC’s TRIUMF physics laboratory;
- Improving broadband internet in rural and northern communities;
- $90 million to the Forest Industry Transformation program; and
- $390 million to Parks Canada to improve and repair the facility and infrastructure around national parks and historic canals, including the Trans-Canada highway passing through Glacier National Park in B.C.
