Lessons in Leadership
By Nicole Zschach
This bi-annual series sponsored by The Institute of Chartered Accountant of British Columbia (ICABC) provided young professionals an opportunity to gain insight from two accomplished business leaders and Chartered Accountants about their respective career paths, benefits of being a CA, and the factors which have contributed to their success. Guests heard from Joanna Pearson, Audi Partners at Deloitte and Colin Mackinnon, Senior Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer for the British Columbia Auto Association.
Joanna begun by sharing the opportunity and adventure that has come with her career. Some of these adventures include working in Paris for three years and visiting several South America countries while working with clients in the mining sector. Joanna attributes a large part of her professional success to mentors she has had along the way that helped her obtain her CA – a culture that is inherent in the profession. When speaking about mentors Joanna reminded guests that “people will take an interest in you, if you take an interest in you.”
Colin provided an insightful outline of his education which includes a bachelor of science, a Masters of Business Administration, and a Chartered Accountant designation. After obtaining his CA Colin went on to hold senior financial position in the private sector, eventually joining BCAA 15 years ago. Colin attributes his success to great friends and colleagues, hard work, and a loving family. He strongly encouraged guests to network, find a great mentor, and give back to your their community. When speaking about balance he reminded guests that “you can’t make your job your life.”
Following the presentations the floor was opened to questions. Both speakers highlighted a strong work ethic and a high level of integrity as imperative for any career one chooses. When hiring both seek out candidates with excellent communication skills and a proven ability to deliver results.
Following the program, guests enjoyed appetizers and refreshments courtesy of ICABC. Joanna and Colin were incredibly generous with their time as they answered a variety of questions from CA hopefuls. The Vancouver Board of Trade would like to thank The Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia and both speakers for making this event possible. ICABC is a long-time supporter and proud event sponsor of the Leaders of Tomorrow Mentorship Program. More information about how you can obtain a CA Designation is available at www.becomea.ca
