City of Vancouver seeks nominations for Cultural Harmony Awards

Cultural Harmony Awards

The City of Vancouver invites the business community to submit nominations for the eighth annual Cultural Harmony Awards.

The Cultural Harmony Awards recognize outstanding contributions by individuals, groups and organizations in promoting better understanding, acceptance and positive relations among people of different cultural backgrounds.

Sponsored by City Council’s Special Advisory Committee on Cultural Communities and the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, an independent jury chooses the recipients based on the nature, scope and impact of achievements.

Winners are honoured with a tree planted in their name and a plaque in the Park Board’s Cultural Harmony Grove on the south shore of False Creek. In addition, Vancouver City Council recognizes the recipients at a council meeting with a certificate and a reception hosted in their honour.

Past winners

In 2002, the Cultural Harmony Awards recognized A Step Ahead Foundation and John Halani.

Founded by Leon Bibb, the Step Ahead program has been presenting interactive and anti-racism programs to secondary school students around the province since 1993.

John Halani was honoured for his many years of work promoting Canadian unity and good citizenship. John has been instrumental in organizing the annual ethno-business awards, which profile the achievements of immigrants and their contributions to our economy.

Recipients from previous years include: Clive Mallory of the 411 Seniors Centre, First Lutheran Church, Donna Spencer of the FireHall Arts Centre, Mount Saint Joseph Hospital, and the WestCoast Early Childhood Multicultural Services.

Nomination deadline approaching

The deadline for nominations this year is September 26, 2003. If you'd like to nominate an individual or an organization, application forms are available from the Equal Employment Opportunity office at City Hall (453 West 12th Avenue, ground floor, tel: 604-873-7786), or on the City's web site at www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/multiculturalism/culturalharmony.
