HMCS Vancouver celebrates 10 years of service
Commander W.J. Riggs, Commanding Officer of the HMCS Vancouver, the Friends of the HMCS Vancuver and Captain (N) Darcy Rezac, Honorary Captain, Canadian Fleet Pacific, Maritime Command and managing director, The Vancouver Board of Trade, hosted a private reception for over 170 guests onboard the HMCS Vancouver on Friday, August 22. The Esquimalt-based HMCS Vancouver was visiting New Westminster at New Westminster Quay to celebrate the first decade of the ship’s service. It was 10 years ago on August 23, 1993 that the Vancouver was commissioned in a ceremony at Canada Place. To celebrate, the ship was also open to the public on August 23 for upper deck tours. The HMCS Vancouver is the second of 12 HALIFAX Class Frigates built under the Canadian Patrol Frigate Program. One of the most advanced warships in the world, it was designed primarily as a general-purpose frigate, carrying extensive anti-submarine, anti-surface and anti-air defense systems.
