Media Release Radio Canada International, March 22, 2004 Five Live from Yellowknife — Radio Canada International goes to Caribou Carnival Radio Canada International is going live and local at the Yellowknife Caribou Carnival, with five flagship programs broadcasting direct from the Northwest Territories capital. From March 24 to 28, 2004, RCI connects the rest of the planet to Yellowknife. Listeners with a fascination for the Far North, the capacity for survival and adaptation of those who live there, its wide open spaces and the cultures of its peoples won’t want to miss a single one of our stories. What began in 1954 as a strongman competition with a twist (extreme cold resistance and other acts of bravado were required to be crowned a "King of the North") has evolved into the Caribou Carnival, which includes a wacky array of anything-goes competitions (snowshoe tennis, anyone? how about the ugly dog and truck contest?), dog derbies, snowmobiling, ice sculpting, family activities and live performances, all speaking to the vitality of Far North culture. The "strongman" portion of the competition, since officially renamed the Arctic Grandmaster Competition, celebrates its 49th edition this year. Log on to www.rcinet.ca to listen live, and journey to the land of the Caribou.
