Alberta Premier Ralph Klein to speak in Vancouver — luncheon at Fairmont Hotel to benefit BC-Yukon CNIB

Klein

Alberta Premier Ralph Klein, currently serving his fourth term as leader of Canada’s resource-rich western province, will speak in Vancouver on March 17 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver in support of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) BC-Yukon Division.

Premier Klein’s commitment to the CNIB dates back to his days as mayor of Calgary, when he refereed annual blind hockey games between the SeeHawks and the Progress Club. Since then, he has become a champion for quality of life issues and legislation in support of Alberta’s blind population.

Klein was also the first premier to serve as a volunteer reader for VoicePrint, Canada’s national broadcast reading service for the blind.

"I am a great admirer of the CNIB’s work," said Premier Klein. "The CNIB displays an ongoing commitment to excellence in its efforts to provide blind and visually impaired people with services and support to lead full and independent lives. I have supported the work of the CNIB in Alberta and I am honoured to be asked to speak at the upcoming luncheon in Vancouver to share Alberta’s vision for the future."

In British Columbia and the Yukon, the CNIB provides rehabilitation services to more than 17,000 children and adults who are blind, visually impaired, or deaf-blind, with the aim of helping them find ways to lead satisfying lives. Underlying all CNIB services and actions is the belief that blind or visually impaired individuals can be integrated into the mainstream of community life, according to their ability to function within that community.

CNIB Service centres are located in Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo, Kelowna, Kamloops, Prince George, Kitimat and Whitehorse.

Tickets for the luncheon, as well as for a pre-luncheon private reception with Premier Klein, are available by phoning Cynthia Cafferky at 604-431-2034 or or e-mailing cynthia.cafferky@cnib.ca. The luncheon will include a live auction for a round of golf with Premier Klein for three people, and overnight accommodation at Bear Mountain in Victoria. Arts Umbrella

SOV Partner

Arts Umbrella is Canada’s pre-eminent arts institute for young people, ages 2 to 19.

Participating in the arts brings our students joy and excitement. We also know that arts education can have a positive impact on academic acheivements and personal growth. At Arts Umbrella, we imagine a world where all children have access to these life-inspiring opportunities. So while thousands of children participate in our tuition-based programming on Granville Island each year, we reach thousands more in their neighbourhoods through free programs, bringing the arts to kids who otherwise would not be able to participate. We can only make this happen with the support of donors, sponors and community members who share our vision and contribute to the ongoing health of Arts Umbrella; they’re helping us reach our goal of "inspiring kids for life."
