Media Release June 21, 2006, The Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts Heartbeat first-ever Asian stage production nominated for Dora Award
Heartbeat, the 2005 percussion-based action-musical produced by Sight, Sound & Action, becomes the first-ever Asian stage production to be nominated at the Dora Mavor Moore Awards held in Toronto with not just one but three nominations, including Outstanding Direction of a Musical, Outstanding Costume Design, and Outstanding Choreography. Named after Ms. Dora Mavor Moore, a prominent figure in the establishment of Canadian professional theatre, the Dora Award is an annual award that recognizes five different categories of outstanding Canadian theatrical productions: General Theatre, Independent Theatre, Dance, Opera, and Theatre for Young Audiences. This year marks the 27th Annual Dora Awards, and a total of 197 productions will be running for 33 titles on June 26, 2006 at the Winter Garden Theatre. Producer Dennis K. Law says, "As much as we are honoured to be nominated at the Dora, we are also delighted to be the first Chinese stage show to be recognized alongside other large-scale international productions. This truly marks an important milestone for Chinese performing arts!" Heartbeat, the most lavish and spectacular percussion dance show ever produced, premiered here in Vancouver at The Centre In Vancouver for Performing Arts last summer, followed by a national tour as part of the First Annual Chinese Performing Arts Festival. Featuring an impressive cast of over 65 dancers, the show takes the audience through the history of drums and drum dance through two millennia of Chinese history. Supported by over 400 incredible handmade period costumes and a multitude of fantastic sets depicting the glorious dynasties of China, the show was deemed "absolutely stunning" and "a sensual feast" by its critics. Dr. Dennis K. Law, CEO of Sight, Sound & Action and producer of Heartbeat, will be hosting a press conference at The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts (777 Homer Street, Vancouver) on June 29, 2006, from 10 to 10:30 am, to share with the media his stories, his thoughts, and his new upcoming shows for summer 2006. Exclusive media kits with stills, footage and details of both Heartbeat and the lineup of the Second Annual Chinese Performing Arts Festival will be available to the media who attend the press conference. Dr. Law will also be available for one-on-one interviews from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon — please RSVP for your spot, as the slots are limited.
