Spirit of Vancouver joined community, business and tourism leaders today at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club to recognize Vancouver AM as a community partner on its 30th anniversary.

Spirit of Vancouver, an initiative of The Vancouver Board of Trade, made the presentation in recognition of Vancouver AM’s contribution over the past 30 years to the city’s tourism industry and community spirit.

The Board of Trade’s new chairman and Spirit of Vancouver co-chair, Frank Borowicz, QC, congratulated Vancouver AM president Paul LeBlanc.

"We’re recognizing Vancouver AM today because since it was founded in 1976, its sole objective has been to support the city as a great place to live, and foster the growth of our tourism industry," said Borowicz before the ceremony. "As a result, we’re very pleased to welcome Vancouver AM as a community partner of the Spirit of Vancouver."

Spirit of Vancouver executive director Blair Qualey agreed it was appropriate to recognize Vancouver AM’s contribution as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. "When it comes to promoting civic pride, Vancouver AM is one of the pioneering organizations in our city," Qualey said.

Over the years, Vancouver AM members have worked on any number of community initiatives, from hosting a community breakfast every week (now bi-weekly) to volunteering at the annual fireworks displays, Molson Indy, and helping out at city parades going back to the days of the old PNE parade down Hastings Street.

Darcy Rezac, The Board of Trade’s managing director, added that 25 years ago, Vancouver AM gifted the "Welcome to Vancouver" signs at the entrances to the city.

"Take a look at any positive initiative to promote community spirit over the past 30 years, and you’ll find Vancouver AM’s fingerprints all over it," added Rezac. "From our perspective, this recognition is long overdue."

During Vancouver AM’s 30th anniversary reunion, president Paul LeBlanc said AM members stay in touch with the community, particularly the tourism sector. "We have hosted hundreds of breakfast meetings over the past three decades, and provided a great place to meet for people who contribute to Vancouver," noted Leblanc.

"It all started as NETMA (No One Ever Tells Me Anything) 30 years ago, and grew to be the place where people got to know each other as they volunteered. Many of those same people over the years have become leaders in this community and the province of B.C."

Vancouver AM alumni include Premier Gordon Campbell, Grace McCarthy, Rick Antonson, Peter Armstrong, Marguerite Ford, Diane Robinson, Malcolm Ashford, Raymond Greenwood, Pam Glass, Bea Leinbach and Dal Richards, to name a few.

Leblanc said Vancouver AM looks forward to being part of the Spirit of Vancouver as a community partner. "The foundation is in place and our members welcome the opportunity to contribute now and in the future, as we have for many years."

The Vancouver Board of Trade’s grassroots Spirit of Vancouver campaign got its start in 2001 as an effort to promote community spirit and the involvement of the business community in making Vancouver an exciting place to live, work, play, invest and visit.
