These days, employing sustainability practices is not just good for the environment — it makes good business sense too. Canadian consumers are more demanding of the places they do business with and British Columbians are leading the trend.

According to a recent Ipsos-Reid poll, 75 per cent of British Columbians consciously have made the decision to purchase a product or service from a company because they felt it did business in a socially responsible way, and 68 per cent of Canadians pay attention to corporate social responsibility issues.

In the early years, companies earning awards for social and environmental leadership were pioneers in Corporate Responsibility. "It's been exciting to see these practices move from fringe to mainstream business, to see companies using triple-bottom-line decision-making in their core strategy as well as in everyday operations," says Maureen Cureton, board spokesperson for the BC Ethics in Action Society. "These visionaries view sustainability as an opportunity, not simply an obligation."

Ethics in Action Awards recipients are both large and small firms, and come from a wide variety of business sectors across the province — retail, manufacturing, personal services, banking, printing, advertising, and high tech are a few industries winning awards in recent years. Awards will be made in Environmental Excellence, Community Care, Overall Leadership in Corporate Responsibility, or Individual Impact.

Ethics in Action, B.C.'s respected voice in ethical business, is now in its 13th year rewarding innovative companies as well as courageous individuals for leadership in social and environmental management. This year's gala awards evening is in early November. Award applications are being accepted until the deadline of July 31, and finalists will be announced in September.

Individuals and businesses that are committed to corporate social responsibility are encouraged to apply direct at www.ethicsinaction.com. But hurry — the deadline for completed applications is July 31, 2006!
