Media Release July 26, 2006, Grouse Mountain Resort Climb a mountain, save your breath: The 16th annual BMO Bank of Montreal Grouse Grind Mountain Run to raise funds for BC Lung Association
Over 600 motivated hikers will earn their bragging rights at the 16th annual BMO Bank of Montreal Grouse Grind Mountain Run, taking place on Sunday, September 24, 2006. This year, Vancouver’s infamous trail run will unite hikers of all ages and abilities for a great cause. With the assistance of returning title sponsor BMO Bank of Montreal, Grouse Mountain has secured the BC Lung Association as the beneficiary of the race, establishing another very relevant event partner. "It is only fitting for participants in Canada’s most famous trail run to assist the BC Lung Association in promoting and improving lung health for all of B.C.’s residents," says Henry Donkers, personal banking area manager, North Shore and Sunshine Coast, BMO. Not only will a portion of registration fees be donated to the charity, but participants will also have the option to collect pledges from family and friends through their own, personalized online pledge tracking page. This is the second year that BMO has signed on to be the event’s title sponsor, demonstrating the bank’s commitment to help Canada's regions and communities remain strong and vibrant. The Grouse Grind Trail produces some of the most amazing feats of resilience, determination, and athleticism. The grueling trek begins in the Valley of Grouse Mountain and takes participants up the 2.9 kilometre trail. Often called "Mother Nature’s Stairmaster," the ultra-challenging trail has an elevation gain of 853 metres (2,800 feet) with an ascending gradient of close to 40 degrees. Twenty-two-year-old Michael Simpson of North Vancouver set a new official course record at last year’s race, coming in at an amazing time of 26:26. Kelly Matoul continues to hold the women's record at 32:54. For more information: Kelly Aldinger, communications coordinator, Grouse Mountain Resorts, Ltd.
