Spirit of Vancouver® announces award finalists — awards to be presented September 27, 2006

Spirit of Vancouver Awards 2006

The Vancouver Board of Trade will honour winners of the 2006 Spirit of Vancouver Awards at a special luncheon on Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at the Pan Pacific Vancouver. Register/details

Individuals, companies and community organizations have been nominated in several categories. In addition, Constable Jeff Schwenneker of the Vancouver Police Department and Captain Doug Steele of the Vancouver Fire Rescue Service will be honoured with Police Officer of the Year and Fire Fighter of the Year awards.

The 2006 Award recipients will be announced at the luncheon from the following list of finalists:

2006 Spirit of Vancouver Awards finalists

Individual Award

  • Larry Beasley, retiring co-director of planning, City of Vancouver, for his contribution to the livability of Vancouver and shaping the downtown peninsula.
  • Bing Thom for his award-winning contributions to the architecture of Vancouver, including projects like the Pacific Canada Pavilion at the Vancouver Aquarium, the Chan Centre at UBC and the Sunset Community Centre.
  • Denise Turner for her service in various organizations serving women and children of the Lower Mainland, including Big Sisters and presently as vice-president of the YWCA.

Community Organization Award — presented by Terasen

  • B.C. Olympic Games Secretariat for the unprecedented success of the B.C.-Canada Place Pavilion at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy.
  • Covenant House for providing shelter and sanctuary from the streets for crisis youth and for helping young people make desperately needed changes in their lives and begin their journey towards independence.
  • ForEd BC Society for its work with organizations like the Spirit Bear Youth Coalition and the Aboriginal Forest Industries Council and support of the important causes these organization serve.

Corporate Award — presented by Accenture

  • Bell Canada for its Connected to Communities program, focusing on the health of children and youth, and many other community initiatives and investments.
  • McIvor Communications and Jane McIvor for their donation of time and business expertise to the One to One Literacy Society, which reaches into local elementary schools to help children learn literacy skills for life, through one to one tutoring.
  • RBC Financial Group for its ongoing support of community initiatives, ranging from RBC Painting Competition and the RBC After School Grants Program to its long-term commitment to amateur sport.

Media Award

  • Bill Good, CKNW, for bringing unflinching attention to the causes and possible solutions to crime in Vancouver.
  • JRFM 93.7 Radio for its support of the 12th Annual Basics for Babies campaign, which provides diapers, formula, and baby food to babies and families in need.
  • The Province for its revealing crime series and its ongoing commitment to reporting the true facts of crime in Vancouver.

Special Event Award — presented by TELUS

  • 2006 World Junior Hockey Championship for organizing the most successful World Junior Hockey Championship in tournament history
  • Grey Cup Festival for organizing the successful "Party on the Pacific," bringing an estimated 100,000 spectators to Vancouver for the Party, the Parade and the Game.
  • The Fair at the PNE, for entertaining Vancouverites since 1910. The Fair has been a landmark on the B.C. festival scene and has never failed to entertain, drawing upwards of 900,000 fairgoers each year.

Police Officer of the Year — presented by Sierra Systems

  • Constable Jeff Schwenneker, a 20-year veteran of the Vancouver Police Department, who is currently assigned to the Commercial Vehicle Unit.

Fire Fighter of the Year

  • Captain Doug Steele, a 32-year veteran of Vancouver Fire Rescue Service and currently an acting battalion chief.

Award presenters include Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan and Frank S. Borowicz, Q.C., chairman and chief elected officer, The Vancouver Board of Trade and co-chair, Spirit of Vancouver.
