Media Release

November 3, 2006, Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games

VANOC and CCES partner on goal of doping-free Games in 2010

The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) are pleased to announce a partnership for the delivery of anti-doping services for the 2010 Winter Games through the VANOC Anti-Doping Program. The announcement was made on the occasion of Sport Leadership 2006 — the largest annual gathering of national sport leaders, coaches, government officials and sport volunteers, being held in Vancouver from November 3-5, 2006.

VANOC and the CCES have worked together for more than two years to develop an anti-doping program with the primary objective of seeking to prevent, deter and detect doping through a comprehensive approach. This approach includes an extensive pre-Games education program aimed at both Canadian and international athletes. It also includes a pre-Games testing program.

"Canada and the CCES are world leaders in the fight against doping in sport. This partnership between the CCES and VANOC underscores our commitment to staging doping-free Games," said Dr. Jack Taunton, VANOC’s chief medical officer. "The CCES is providing valuable support to VANOC, including the release of senior staff to join the VANOC team until after the Games and providing services on a cost-recovery basis."

"This partnership will provide Canadian athletes and the international sport community with a tremendous level of confidence in the anti-doping program for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games," commented CCES board chair, Dr. Roger Jackson. "When a world leader such as the CCES takes on this kind of responsibility, it’s a made-in-Canada solution that will be showcased on the world stage. The VANOC Anti-Doping Program will provide a model of excellence for future international sport organizing committees and other major games organizations," said Jackson.

The VANOC Anti-Doping Program will be conducted under VANOC’s authority. The CCES, an independent, ISO (International Standards Organization)-certified, national anti-doping agency, will provide VANOC with expertise and training as well as a range of other services.

The CCES is a non-profit organization which promotes ethical sport for all Canadians through research, promotion, education, detection and deterrence. The CCES conducts many of these programs through partnerships with other organizations. For more information, visit www.cces.ca

VANOC is responsible for the planning, organizing, financing and staging of the XXI Olympic Winter Games and the X Paralympic Winter Games in 2010. The 2010 Olympic Winter Games will be staged in Vancouver and Whistler from February 12 to 28, 2010. Vancouver and Whistler will host the Paralympic Winter Games from March 12 to 21, 2010.
