BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum

The British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum announced the selection of eight individuals and one team for induction to as part of its 2007 class.

"There are so many deserving candidates for induction into the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, and the choice was not easy," said Dann Konkin, chair of the board of trustees, BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. "Our selection committee did an outstanding job, though, of sifting through and discussing the merits of all nominations."

"The induction ceremony on May 31, 2007 will showcase the best in BC sport."

Selection for induction recognizes excellence in sport, contribution to sport and the impact on sport in British Columbia, in the categories of athlete, team, builder, and pioneer. A selection committee, comprised of members of the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum board of trustees, the media and the sport community made the final decision.

As part of the 39th induction class, five athletes will be honoured: Marni Abbott (wheelchair basketball); Tony Bardsley (tennis); Hans De Goede (rugby); Craig Forrest (soccer); and Rick Hansen (wheelchair athletics). In the builder category, Herb Capozzi (all-round) and Peter Webster (all-round) have been selected.

One team, the 2004 Vancouver Whitecaps Women’s Soccer Team, will join pioneer Mary (Frizzell) Thomasson (track and field).

Formal induction into the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum will take place on May 31, 2007 at the 39th Annual Banquet of Champions at the Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre. With the induction of eight individuals and one team, the total honoured members will stand at 291 individuals and 49 teams.

Since 1966, the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum has operated as a non-profit, self-sustaining society with a goal to establish a permanent tribute honouring B.C.'s outstanding athletes, teams and builders of sport. The BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum offers tailored programs and activities to school and community groups as part of its mandate to raise awareness of sport and sport history, and fulfill its mission to: "Honour the Past. Inspire the future."
