Comedy show looking for laughter to support mental health programs

Comedy Courage, a unique program that teaches people with mental health diagnoses and issues how to write a comedy routine about their own personal journeys to wellness, is seeking courageous and comedic individuals with mental health diagnoses or issues to apply for a free three-month comedic training course. The program finale is a gala fundraising event where the students perform before a live audience.

Comedy Courage is the first program of its kind in Canada and is now Canada's largest comedy benefit concert in support of mental health wellness and our mental health communities.

"Comedy Courage’s vision is to empower individuals with mental health diagnoses to discover their comedic talent and to educate and create public awareness to break the stigma of mental illness," said Darcy James Goral, president of Comedy Courage. "Our goal is to raise funds for direct service agencies that support people living with mental health diagnoses."

Renowned professional comic Patrick Maliha is leading the classes held at Lafflines Comedy Club in New Westminster. A maximum of 15 participants will be accepted for the 2007 program. Training consists of one to two afternoon classes each week for a three-month period beginning in mid-February. Applications to the program are available on www.comedycourage.com and are being accepted until January 31, 2007.

Coast Capital Savings Credit Union is this year’s presenting sponsor of the "Laughing and Giving from the Heart Gala," where the new comedians showcase their talent. "Comedy Courage gives people with mental health diagnoses and issues the opportunity to prove what they can do, and we’re pleased to champion them in this undertaking," said Lloyd Craig, Coast Capital Savings’ president and CEO.

Hosted by Global BC’s John L. Daly, the Gala will be held at the Westin Bayshore Hotel in Vancouver, on May 23, 2007. All proceeds from the gala this year will go to the Mind Foundation of BC and the BC Schizophrenia Society.
