Media Release February 28, 2007 TELUS Millennium Breakfast fund now at $4.6 million
The TELUS Millennium Scholarship Breakfast sold out for the eighth straight year on Tuesday as 1,200 supporters filled the Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre to raise $600,000 for University of British Columbia (UBC) student-athlete scholarships. The endowment fund, which was created to keep our best student-athletes in Canada, at UBC, now sits at $4.6 million. In the seven seasons of varsity competition since the inaugural Breakfast, numerous student-athletes have chosen to remain in, or return to, Canada and attend UBC, and Thunderbird teams have won an unrivaled 31 national championships, with men’s volleyball and both basketball teams still in the running for titles this March. In fact, Thunderbird teams have brought home 24 Canadian Interuniversity Sport titles over that seven-year stretch, just seven less than all the schools in Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada combined in the 13 CIS sports UBC competes in. New UBC president Professor Stephen Toope and two-time Olympic hockey gold medalist Hayley Wickenheiser spoke at the event, which is the most successful single-day athletics fundraiser in Canada. The university provides matching money for all donations, and every dollar raised goes directly toward athletic-based scholarships for Thunderbird student-athletes. "The continued success of this event is remarkable and inspiring to witness," said UBC athletic director Bob Philip. "The generosity of our alumni and the greater community has been unparalleled, and the commitment and support of our friends at TELUS has provided a tremendous boost to the Breakfast. "I think it shows that people share our vision of what it takes to be a world-class athletic department, and at the centre of that is the goal of keeping our best and brightest student-athletes in Canada." Also on Tuesday, Wickenheiser and The Hon. Iona Campagnolo, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, attended a luncheon where the creation of the Hayley Wickenheiser Women’s Hockey Endowment was announced. The fund, which will benefit UBC women’s hockey players for years to come, was established through a gift from Calgary businesswoman Lois Mitchell. |
