Fireworks will light the sky this summer: 2007 HSBC Celebration of Light fireworks competition confirmed thanks to Vancouver’s corporate community

HSBC Celebration of Light

The summer of 2007 will once again see the sky lit up thanks to the generosity of Vancouver’s corporate community and the overwhelming support of residents. Joined by Mayor Sam Sullivan, HSBC Bank Canada president Lindsay Gordon, and leaders from the other corporate supporters, Fireworks Festival board chair Frank Palmer announced that the immediate future of the HSBC Celebration of Light is secure, and plans are already underway to secure the long-term future of Vancouver’s signature summer event.

"2007 is going to be the biggest and best show yet for our sponsors and this community with the HSBC Celebration of Light. It's free, it's fun and it's for families. And for all of you, and the thousands of tourists who visit us, we’re going to light up the skies this summer like never before! This annual celebration of fireworks timed and choreographed to music will continue to glow, splash and flash a rainbow of colours across the beautiful Vancouver skyline" announced Palmer.

"With new evening sponsorship from London Drugs and Concord Pacific Group, plus renewing sponsorship from BC Hydro Power Smart and the significant sponsorship commitment announced last week from BC Lottery Corporation and Starlight Casino, Vancouver’s signature event — the HSBC Celebration of Light — will take place in 2007 on July 25, July 28, August 1 and August 4."

In making the announcement, Mayor Sam Sullivan stated: "The HSBC Celebration of Light is a highlight of Vancouver’s summer and a very important event to both residents and visitors alike. Economically, their impact is significant and the worldwide recognition of the event adds prestige to our city. Most importantly, residents and visitors truly enjoy this free, fun event. Thanks to HSBC Bank Canada and all the sponsors who have stepped up to make sure the fireworks tradition continues."

Mr. Lindsay Gordon, president and CEO of HSBC Bank Canada, re-affirmed the bank’s commitment to the international fireworks competition, stating, "HSBC Bank Canada recognizes the value of the HSBC Celebration of Light to the city and the region. As 'the world’s local bank,' we are pleased to continue as the title sponsor of the best event of the summer in Greater Vancouver. We look forward to working with the Vancouver Fireworks Festival Society and the new event sponsors to light up the skies again this year."

"It is a perfect match for London Drugs to host Canada in this year’s fireworks festival," said Clint Mahlman, vice-president of retail operations for London Drugs. "London Drugs is 100 per cent Canadian owned and operated and extremely proud to be Canadian. When we were asked to consider supporting this year’s festival, we knew it was important for us to help ensure the fireworks festival could go on. The Celebration of Light is an important part of what makes Vancouver exciting and is also great for tourism."

Two new premium partner sponsorships were also announced: Tourism British Columbia and the Ministry of Tourism, Sport and the Arts along with the Vancouver Airport Authority (YVR) join Tourism Vancouver as premium partners in presenting the HSBC Celebration of Light.

Media partnerships with The Vancouver Sun, The Province, Global TV, CKNW Radio, Classic Rock 101 and Pattison Outdoor will continue for the presentation of the 2007 fireworks.

The HSBC Celebration of Light International Fireworks Competition for 2007:

  • July 25 — Spain, presented by BC Hydro Power Smart
  • July 28 — Canada, presented by London Drugs
  • August 1 — China, presented by Concord Pacific Group
  • August 4 — Grande Finale, presented by BC Lottery Corporation and Starlight Casino

Frank Palmer, chair of the Vancouver Fireworks Festival Society, thanked all the sponsors who came forward to make sure the fireworks continue in 2007 and concluded, "This is a great event, and great events require great commitments from great supporters. Building for the future and to continue great opportunities for the community and partners means we are always looking for new sponsors and new marketing programs. We will have more event announcements over the next few months when we announce our celebrity judging panel, unveil some unique new promotions and announce an opportunity for the public and merchants to participate in keeping the fireworks in Vancouver for many years to come."
