The Vancouver Board of Trade, Feburary 15, 2001

Carole TaylorCarole Taylor to head Board of Trade Task Force

At an emergency meeting yesterday, the directors of The Vancouver Board of Trade created a special Community Leadership Task Force to rally community leaders to the challenge of revitalizing community spirit. The task force, to be headed by incoming Chair Carole Taylor, was formed to combat the growing perception that Vancouver is losing its vital cultural and entertainment assets.

"Reports about losing the Vancouver Grizzlies combined with the uncertainty over the Indy and the cancellation of the Symphony of Fire signify a turning point for our members who don't want to see Vancouver viewed as an economic, cultural and social backwater," said Darcy Rezac, Managing Director of The Board of Trade.

Taylor's first action will be to call a meeting of community leaders including Mayor Philip Owen, Canucks GM Brian Burke, incoming Tourism Chair Patrick Kelly and senior decision-makers from business and the cultural sector.

"Vancouver is worth fighting for," said Taylor, adding that The Board would muster corporate leaders to promote the status of Vancouver as a leading international investment centre. Taylor emphasized that "business has a stake in recapturing the vitality of Vancouver." She also pointed out that many of the social problems facing the city could be largely addressed through better economic opportunity for citizens.

Following its first meeting in three weeks time, the Community Leadership Task Force will launch a program of action targeting national and international audiences.

Task force members include: Mayor Philip Owen; Patrick Kelly, Board of Trade Director and incoming Chair of Tourism Vancouver; Larry Berg, President and CEO, Vancouver International Airport Authority; Don Calder, CEO, Vancouver Whistler 2010 Bid Corporation; Dr. John Wiebe, President and CEO, Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada; Barbara Buchanan, Chair, Vancouver School Board of Trustee; and John Nightingale, President, Vancouver Aquarium.
