Dragon Boat Festival celebrates 15th year
The Alcan Dragon Boat Festival celebrated its 15th birthday in style this year. The Festival was held at Concord Pacific Place and the Plaza of Nations from June 13 to 15 and drew a record 185 dragon boat teams. Race organizers added a new challenge this year — for the last race of the Festival, they invited the top six teams in three divisions to take part in the "Guts and Glory" race. A regular dragon boat race is 500 meters long — this was a 2,000-meter race. Paddlers started at the finish line and did the course four times with wide turns at each end. Race director Greg Lamb said it was a North American first. "With 18 teams competing and 22 members on each team, we had almost 400 people on the water at once. Everyone had a great time. We hope it’s the start of a tradition." As well as races to watch, there was live music all weekend, food from around the world, kids’ activities and more. Organizers estimate that 100,000 people visited the site over the Festival’s three days. The Alcan Dragon Boat Festival is now an established part of Vancouver’s summer festival scene. Spirit of Vancouver partner Concord Pacific Group Inc. is a Gold Sponsor and the host site for the Alcan Dragon Boat Festival since its inception. |
