Media Release Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre, June 26, 2003 Aquarium's new Tropic Zone immerses visitors in a living underwater art gallery
The Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre held the grand opening of its new Tropic Zone on Thursday, June 26, 2003. The H.R. MacMillan Tropical Gallery has been completely transformed and includes renovated exhibits, the latest technology and exotic new animals. Popular black-tip reef sharks, lionfish, and seahorses are joined in the Tropic Zone by new rainbowfish, southern stingrays, and bamboo sharks. One of the new exhibits is a moray eel wall, where several species of morays, including the purple mouth, snowflake, zebra and tiger snake varieties, play peek-a-boo with visitors from a wall honeycombed with small caves.
Other animals include Lake Malawi cichlids, psychedelic mandarin gobies, longhorn cowfish, tangs, butterfly fish, and a green sea turtle, which now calls the shark habitat home. New technology has been added to complement the gallery's graphics: large plasma screens and touch-screen monitors offer an interactive approach to learning. The refurbished H.R. MacMillan Tropical Gallery, along with the Graham Amazon Gallery, make up the new Tropic Zone. For further information, please contact: Angela Nielsen
