The countdown has begun for the 2003 World Weightlifting Championships that will be staged at the Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre from November 14 to 22, 2003, where some 25,000 spectators are expected to attend over the nine days of competition.

Today marks 100 days until the first gold medal will be awarded to one of the 650 athletes from 85 countries who will be on hand for the event, which is the main qualifier for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, with athletes competing for a total of 187 spots.

The Championships will be the first World Championship to be staged in the city since the International Olympic Committee award the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games to Vancouver on July 2.

Among the entries expected for the World Championships are three-time Olympic champions Pyrros Dimas and Akakios Khakiasvillis of Greece and two-time Olympic champ Halil Mutlu of Turkey.

Canada is expected to have a strong team led by Maryse Turcotte from Quebec (fourth place at Sydney 2000 Olympics and bronze medallist at the 2002 World Weightlifting Championships) and Akos Sandor from Ontario.

The Local Organizing Committee announced the commitment of support from the government of Canada, the provincial government of B.C. and the City of Vancouver, who are joining the Washington Marine Group as the founding partners of the event. Over 15 other sponsors were also announced.

Plans were unveiled for a Youth and Education initiative that will see over 6,000 children from around the Lower Mainland attend the 2003 World Weightlifting Championships and learn in the classroom about the sport and ideals of training.

Affordable tickets are now on sale through the World Weightlifting Championships web site at www.2003wwc.com or through TicketMaster at www.ticketmaster.ca.
