Public Dreams to perform in Athens at 2004 Olympic Games

Public Dreams to perform in Athens
Public Dreams to perform in Athens

In late May of this year, Public Dreams received an invitation from the Municipality of Athens to send a troupe of performers to represent Canada in the cultural component of The Summer Games. Public Dreams would be one of many countries coming to participate in an evening street festival that would animate various areas within the city of Athens during the Games.

The Municipality was thrilled to learn of the range of spectacle and performance elements that Public Dreams could provide, but were most interested in the fire and stilting components.

So... the journey began. For the last few months, Public Dreams has been in search of the support funding to get their troupe of eight to Athens. With the assistance of The Canadian Embassy in Athens, The Canada Council and The BC Arts Council, the group was able to secure its participation.

Public Dreams has created a unique, specially produced 45-minute performance called The Fire Weavers. The group will be staging this performance for five consecutive evenings in various locations throughout Athens. The street performances are scheduled nightly from August 24 to 28 at 11 p.m. On August 23, Public Dreams will be performing at The Canada Olympic House as well as doing a live on-air performance on the same evening for ET-1, a Greek National TV station.

Using a range of awe-inspiring tools, the Fire Weavers will dazzle audiences with their elaborate displays of skill, daring and style. This Canadian group will capture the hearts and imagination of audiences with their creative use of fire-breathing, fire-swords, twirling fire hula hoops and costumed stilt walkers.

Fire is an age-old symbol of the light that burns within us and embodies the harmony and goodwill which represent the ideals of the Olympic Games. It is paramount to the telling of this engaging story, which celebrates the journey of life and transcends all language and cultural barriers.

Costumed characters will represent Canada's dramatic elements of nature: The Spirit of Winter, The Great Canadian Bald Eagle, The Water Muse, The Fire Nymph, The Spirit of The Forests and The Wild West Canadian Cowboy will animate this truly magical street performance.
