Inspirational British Columbia business leader Lucille Johnstone passes away at 80

Lucille Johnstone, affectionately known in the B.C. business community as "Tugboat Annie," passed away peacefully at Langley Memorial Hospital on Friday, December 31, at the age of 80.

Born and raised in Vancouver, Johnstone was a CGA whose contributions to the lives of British Columbians was recognized with a YWCA Woman of the Year Award, an honorary doctorate from UBC, the Order of British Columbia in 1994 and her appointment as a Member of the Order of Canada in 2003.

Johnstone’s colourful nickname was the product of a 45-year career with the Rivtow Group of Companies, for whom she served as president, director, shareholder and chief operating officer. Johnstone was also a past member of the Board of Directors of the Vancouver International Airport Authority.

"Lucille was definitely one-of-a-kind, with an incredible passion for British Columbia, and it showed in the sort of projects she took on, including Vancouver International Airport," noted Graham Clarke, chair of the Vancouver International Airport Authority. "As one of our founding directors, Lucille played a vital role in getting our local airport authority up and running, and all of us owe her a tremendous debt of gratitude. We are who we are in large part because of her."

During her storied career, Johnstone also served as executive director and CEO of St. John's Ambulance, CEO and chair of Integrated Ferry Corporation (where the largest ship ever to be built in B.C. was constructed) and had been on the board of directors of numerous organizations including Grace Hospital, Expo '86, B.C. Place Ltd., and The Vancouver Board of Trade.

"When you think of Lucille you can’t help but think of community service," added Darcy Rezac, managing director of The Vancouver Board of Trade. "She had an incredible network and knew how to connect people to get things done. She raised the bar on community service and was a tremendous example to everyone who had the good fortune to work with her."

A memorial service will be held at the North Langley Community Church, 21015-96 Avenue, Langley, on Saturday, January 15, 2005 at 12 noon, followed by a reception in the hall. In lieu of flowers, Lucille requested that donations be made to The Fraser River Discovery Centre, 788 Quayside Drive, New Westminster, B.C., V3M 6Z6.
