Tsunami vigil — waves of humanity in response to Asian tragedy

Upwards of 400 people gathered on the shores of English Bay at dusk on Sunday for a candlelight vigil in memory of the thousands lost and millions suffering after the Asian tsunami disaster.

Following remarks by Deputy Premier Shirley Bond and BC Minister of State for Immigration and Multicultural Services, Patrick Wong, members of the Consular Corps whose countries were affected by the tragedy spoke, expressing thanks to British Columbians for their support of relief efforts.

Frank Borowicz, QC, CA (Hon) and vice chair, The Vancouver Board of Trade, represented the Republic of Sri Lanka as its honorary consul general.

At the conclusion of the hour-long event, the solemn crowd moved to the water's edge to plant candles in the sand memory of those lost across the Pacific.

The event was organized and emceed by Vancouver-Burrard MLA Lorne Mayencourt. Donations to the Canadian Red Cross were accepted at the vigil. To make a donation, please visit the Canadian Red Cross at www.redcross.ca.
