Metro Forum 2008:The Cities Conference
Speaker:
Richard Florida, Author, Who's Your City? and Director, Martin Prosperity Institute, Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, Founder Creative Class Group
Topic:
CREATIVE COMMUNITIES: THE SUCCESSFUL FORMULA
When it comes to creativity and our capacity to attract and hold the best and the brightest, how does Metro Vancouver stack up against other major cities across North America?
It’s the most unique economic race of its kind as civic leaders come to grips with the fact that what’s true for corporations is also true for cities and regions. Quite simply, places that succeed in attracting and retaining a creative class of people prosper; those that fail, don't.
In the United States, cities that fail to hold on to their creative class lose their economic dynamism to places like Boston, Washington, D.C. and Seattle—cities that are more tolerant, diverse, and open to creativity. This migration of the creative class means a new social and economic geography is emerging in America, one that doesn’t correspond to old categories like East Coast versus West Coast. Rather, it is more like the class divisions that have increasingly separated Americans by income and neighborhood, extended into the realm of city and region.
Join author and commentator Richard Florida as he offers up some “creative” solutions to building our community and economy.
