Join in the celebration at the 2005 Spirit of Vancouver Awards onboard Holland America's ms Statendam

Join in the celebration as The Vancouver Board of Trade announces and honours the winners of the 2005 Spirit of Vancouver® Awards at a special luncheon on Friday, September 16 onboard Holland America Line's ms Statendam docked at Canada Place.

Individuals, companies and community organizations have been nominated in sveral categories as well as special awards for a police officer and fire fighter.

In addition, the Spirit of Vancouver Awards luncheon will include the presentation of the annual Mike Horsey Free Spirit Award. The Free Spirit award is named for the former deputy minister of tourism and president of BC Pavilion Corporation who was known for thinking outside the box.

Award Finalists:

Corporation Award

  • Business Objects for encouraging involvement and support of various charities.
  • TD Canada Trust for funding the Vancouver International Jazz Festival.
  • Telus for funding an extensive province-wide information tour to raise public awareness about breast cancer.

Community Organization Award

  • BC Hydro Employees’ Community Service Fund (HYDRECS) which funnels charitable contributions from BC Hydro employees and retirees to registered Canadian charities.
  • Firehall Theatre Society/Firehall Arts Centre offering more than three hundred theatre and contemporary dance performances each year. 
  • 2010 LegaciesNow for its new youth program “Chill.” 

Special Event Award

  • Bard on the Beach - Western Canada's largest professional Shakespeare Festival now in its 16th season in Vanier Park.
  • Rogers Santa Claus Parade - The first parade last November attracted 300,000 spectators, well in excess of expectations.
  • St. Patrick’s Day Parade / CelticFest Vancouver - An estimated 45,000 to 50,000 turned out for the second Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade down Granville Street.

Media Award

  • Fanny Kiefer - host of Shaw TV’s Studio 4, named one of 25 most influential Canadian women by Chatelaine magazine.
  • Joy Metcalfe – longtime Vancouver social scene reporter. 
  • Naeem “Nick’ Noorani - started The Canadian Immigrant Magazine as a medium to link and inform immigrants to this country.

Individual Spirit Award

  • Barry Scott, Director and President of Maynard’s.
  • Ron Toigo, Majority Owner of the Vancouver Giants, Director of Shato Holdings and Chairman of 2006 World Junior Hockey Championship Committee.
  • Arthur Willms, Chair of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

Police Officer of the Year

  • Constable Al Arsenault, who is also President of Odd Squad Productions.

Fire Fighter of the Year

  • Fire Fighter Rob Renning, who also teaches CPR & fire safety courses and rescued a drowning fisherman at Spanish Banks.

Mike Horsey Free Spirit Award

  • Lilian To, CEO and Executive Director of SUCCESS.

IN ORDER TO ATTEND, EACH GUEST MUST PROVIDE LEGAL NAME, DATE OF BIRTH AND CITIZENSHIP IN "COMMENTS BOX" AT BOTTOM OF ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM.

The name provided must match that on government issued photo ID at time of boarding.

  • Advance booking is required. Tickets will only be sold until September 8 and no cancellations after Thursday, September 8.
  • When purchasing your ticket(s), please provide the legal name (NOTE: NAME MUST MATCH THAT ON GOVERNMENT ISSUED PHOTO ID), date of birth and citizenship for each guest.
  • Our allotted time to board the ms Statendam is limited.  Please plan to arrive at the Cruise Ship Terminal Level by 9:45 a.m. sharp. No boarding after 10:30 a.m.
  • As each guest will need to clear customs and ship security, please bring photo identification (passport or valid driver's licence).
