Distinguished Speaker Program
Speaker:
The Honourable Michael Kirby, Chair, The Mental Health Commission of Canada
Topic:
MENTAL HEALTH IS THE BUSINESS OF BUSINESS – AND OF ALL CANADIANS
The cost of mental disorders to business and the economy as a whole is enormous – as much as $33 billion a year in lost productivity alone. Moreover, a knowledge economy is a brain-based economy. Promoting mental health and fostering recovery from mental illness are central to Canada’s ability to compete in the knowledge economy.
In his first major speech since being named chair of the newly created Mental Health Commission of Canada, the Honourable Michael Kirby, who also chairs the Global Business and Economic Roundtable on Addiction and Mental health, will speak to the importance – for business, for employees and for all Canadians – of making mental health in the workplace a priority.
Kirby will look at the important role employers can play in bringing mental health issues out of the shadows, highlighting the many positive steps already being taken by both private and public-sector employers, as well as the many challenges that must still be confronted. He will also discuss ways for the Mental Health Commission of Canada and the Business Roundtable to contribute to developing a national approach to mental health.
