Topic:

LEADERSHIP SKILLS BOOTCAMP 2008
Managing in uncertain times – Full Program OR Goleman Lunch Only

Presented in cooperation with the Leaders of Tomorrow ™ The Company of Young Professionals ™ and the Women's Leadership Circleâ.

Have you ever noticed how, before the beginning of each new season, professional athletes go to training camp to brush up on their skills? Have you also noticed that veteran players attend camp side by side with the rookies? That’s because the coach knows that despite their years of experience, the game is always changing and even the most seasoned players can learn a few new tricks and polish their skills.

The same holds true for leadership.  In the face of changing and challenging times, strong leaders never stop improving their skills. No matter if you’re an up and comer, someone who’s moving to the top or a seasoned pro looking for new approaches, this half-day bootcamp is for anyone who needs leadership skills that work today.

Tod Maffin

The Facebook generation knows it is in the driver's seat in the workforce these days. Employers worldwide are scrambling to understand what makes this unique generation tick. Leading edge companies are harnessing and exploiting the powerful networking forces in social media Web sites like Facebook, MySpace, and YouTube to find and recruit the future workforce. In this presentation, Tod Maffin walks audiences through the minefield of challenges involved in this new world of talent management and delivers invaluable insights into the future generation of workers: where to find them, how to attract them, and, perhaps most importantly, how to keep them engaged, motivated and fully productive.

Patricia Lambert
STEPHEN COVEY'S 8TH HABIT: Leadership in the 21st century

Patricia Lambert, Senior Training Consultant, Franklin Covey Canada

Anyone can tell you there is a difference between a great leader and a competent manager. In the 21st century, great leaders are not just evaluated by their achievements, but by the trust they engender and the systems they implement to ensure long term success. Great leaders are assessed by their ability to clarify purpose and to unleash the talent and unique contribution of their workforce toward those objectives.

When we engage in work that taps into our talent and fuels our passion, and rises out of a great need in the world we feel drawn to meet, therein lies our calling, our voice. In this session, learn about the 8th Habit – a mindset, skill set and toolset – that can lead you, your team and your organization to true fulfillment, significance and contribution. It’s a journey that will help you find your own voice and inspire others to find theirs.

Doug Brockway
Session 1
360° ENGAGEMENT: Personal and organizational sustainability program
Doug Brockway, Principal, Brockway Human Services Inc.

It’s a changed labour market.  New solutions are required to recruit and retain the very best talent.  Research has shown that people, who are happy and fully engaged, in all aspects of their lives, play pivotal roles in the success of any company or organization.  Fully engaged employees are keener, more creative leaders who strengthen team spirit and commitment. This workshop features ideas and activities tailored to help you and your teams achieve the very best both on and off the job. You will learn about the critical link between personal sustainability and on the job engagement; why personal sustainability should be yours and your organizations top priority; and tips and tools to increase you and your teams’ level of personal sustainability for long-term success.

Tara Cree
Session 2
BUILDING YOUR LEADERSHP BRAND
Tara Cree, Western Lead, Knightsbridge

Are you a BMW or a Volvo? This workshop goes into depth about one of the most effective career management strategies – developing your own leadership brand.  A leadership brand is what you are known for – your reputation, your strengths, your principles – what distinguishes you from others.  By deliberately creating a brand that represents what you want to be known for, you don’t have to live with a brand that others have developed for you. In this session, you will learn about the importance of branding and how your leadership brand can help you to more effectively manage your career and/or be successful running your own business and you will begin the process of defining your own leadership brand.

Session 3:
GREAT LEADERS TELL STORIES!
Gayle Hallgren-Rezac
, Chief Engagement Officer, Shepa Learning Company and co-author, WORK THE POND! Use the Power of Positive Networking to Leap Forward in Work and Life
Judy Thomson, CA, Chief Operating Officer, Shepa Learning Company and co-author, WORK THE POND! Use the Power of Positive Networking to Leap Forward in Work and Life

From childhood he was a great storyteller.  He would stand on a log and mesmerize the other kids with his impassioned stories.  One of the world’s greatest leaders, Abraham Lincoln, was a masterful storyteller and it was his primary means of communication.  Storytelling is a powerful communication tool for business leaders; this ability to share your values, humanize your company and spread your message.  Most people aren’t very good at it; and asked to tell a story about their organization they are hard pressed to come up with one. This session will awaken the stories in you; teach you how to craft your stories, how to ‘make them stick’ and how to share your stories with others.

12:15 - 2:15 p.m.       Lunch and Keynote

Daniel Goleman Social Intelligence by Daniel Goleman
SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE AND THE HUMAN SIDE OF BUSINESS
Daniel Goleman, Author, Social Intelligence: The New Science of Human Relationships and co-founder, Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning, Yale University Child Studies Center

According to Daniel Goleman, all humans are “wired to connect”, however, if you are not self-aware and emotionally attuned to the people you work with and the environment you work in, you cannot be an effective leader. Such awareness is called Social Intelligence and it is the interpersonal part of human intelligence. Socially intelligent leaders recognize that an important part of their work is to help other people be at their best—motivated, enthused and engaged. In his keynote address, Daniel Goleman, whose previous book, Emotional Intelligence, sold over five million copies and propelled him to fame, shares insights into how we can all become better leaders and increase our Social Intelligence quotient by practicing the arts of listening and mindfulness.

Daniel Goleman is a psychologist who reported on the brain and behavioral sciences for The New York Times for many years. His 1995 book, Emotional Intelligence (Bantam Books) was a New York Times bestseller and has been translated into 30 languages. His latest book is Social Intelligence: The New Science of Human Relationships. Goleman was a co-founder of the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning at the Yale University Child Studies Center (now at the University of Illinois at Chicago), with a mission to help schools introduce emotional literacy courses. One mark of the Collaborative's — and book's — impact is that thousands of schools around the world have begun to implement such programs.
