2010 Games transportation: Passing phase or here to stay?

Vancouver Board of Trade launches 2010 Transportation Legacies Survey for public and business

Vancouver – June 28, 2010/ What is the legacy of Metro Vancouver changing its transportation practices during the 2010 Winter Games? The Vancouver Board of Trade is today launching the most comprehensive 2010 Winter Games Transportation Legacies Survey conducted so far to explore the reactions to, and impact of, the full range of transportation measures implemented during the 17-day 2010 Winter Games period.

VANOC and other agencies have completed a number of other surveys since the closing of the Winter Games, but none of them have dealt with so many “cross-jurisdictional” issues. The survey asks questions about the transportation choices that were made available, and the experiences of Vancouver’s residents and local businesses, during that time.

Researchers from the IBM Institute for Business Value worked in collaboration with the Vancouver Board of Trade Regional Transportation Taskforce to develop the questionnaire. Topics covered include reactions to and use of pedestrian-only roads, Olympic lanes, travel-time restrictions, changed access to roads for trucks, road closures, removal of street parking, relaxation of by-laws [i.e. noise], expanded transit services, additional park & ride facilities, increased quality and availability of information about choices and traffic, staggered office hours, telecommuting, expanded cycling facilities and expanded delivery hours for commercial goods.

Findings from the survey will be used as input for Vancouver Board of Trade policy initiatives in the areas of transportation, land-use planning, policy development and major event support on behalf of its 5,500 members and the region.

Members of the public and regional businesses are invited to complete the short questionnaire available on-line at www.boardoftrade.com before July 31, 2010.
