Sounding Board Archives by Year
LOT helped grow my business This past year, I had the opportunity to participate in the Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) program while studying in my fourth year at Capilano College, the tourism management program. In LOT, I observed a variety of the other students’ experiences, objectives and goals. The primary goal for most students was to receive career guidance in terms of finding and applying for a job. They wanted to know how to get their foot in the door and how to best use their education. I entered LOT in a different position than most, as I have already started my career as the owner of Canadian Outdoor Adventures Inc. My goal while attending LOT was to obtain and learn skills that would best assist me as a young female entrepreneur. I also wanted to learn and polish my networking skills, while creating contacts and alliances for my company through The Vancouver Board of Trade and LOT events. I created Canadian Outdoor Adventures (COA) in the spring of 2003 after completing an adventure tourism internship in Costa Rica. My goal was to create a tailored adventure experience company. Basically, clients tell me what they want to see and do in B.C. and Alberta, and my company creates a detail-oriented package for them, including accommodation, activities, transportation, guides, discounted in-bound flights, meals and anything else they want. Through LOT, I connected with a wide variety of supportive entrepreneurs, executives, business men and women, and students. I was also able to create partnerships and alliances, receive numerous business referrals, and gain valuable advice from the experienced business people. I believe I have become a better networker and this has contributed to the growth of my business. I now belong to variety of organizations, including: The Board, North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, Business Networking International, and a variety of women entrepreneur clubs. I have learned the priceless value of networking — it truly is the key to success. For more information on LOT, visit www.leadersoftomorrow.com.
