Sounding Board January 2008  Vol 48 # 1

Developing leadership brand crucial for women

"Whether you like it or not, you are a brand," says Tara Cree, a leadership development consultant with Knightsbridge "Everything about you, everything you do – or choose not to do – communicates the value and character of your brand."

Cree, who combines her Ph.D. in organizational psychology with over 10 years of experience working with organizations, brings her strategy for developing a leadership brand to The Vancouver Board of Trade on Thursday, January 31. The event, designed specifically for women, is the first in The Board’s innovative Women’s Leadership Circle™ series.

"A leadership brand is what you are known for – your reputation, your strengths, your principles," Cree says. "Having a clear and unique brand and communicating it will enable you to differentiate yourself for whatever your next goal is."

Developing a strong personal brand is particularly important to women leaders or aspiring women leaders looking for strategies to more effectively manage their careers, Cree emphasizes.

"Although there has been progress made in the advancement of women in leadership, the statistics paint somewhat of a discouraging picture," Cree says. "Recent statistics show that women represent only 22 per cent of senior management positions in Canada."

Research suggests that one of the biggest reasons for this is that women are still encountering barriers, and although companies are starting to recognize the need to change and eliminate barriers to women’s advancement, it’s happening slowly. Women need to take control themselves and effectively manage their careers despite the barriers. According to Cree, developing a strong leadership brand is one of the most effective strategies to do just that.

"If you don’t brand yourself, someone else will," cautions Cree, "and it may not be the brand you’re looking for."
