Sounding Board November-December 2006  Vol 46 # 6

Organization helps employers get ahead in B.C.’s intense job market

The good news? Business is booming in British Columbia.

The bad news, unfortunately, is summed up accurately in this recent headline on B.C.’s economy: "Plenty of work, fewer workers."

The fact that B.C.’s job market is tightening up dramatically is not news to employers. And as the talent pool shrinks, employers are facing significant new challenges — and risks — in their endless efforts to screen and shortlist the best job applicants and fit the right person for the job.

As employers pursue solutions, organizations like Career Edge are delivering innovative ways to make recruiting less risky and more rewarding. Career Edge specializes in connecting employers with unique pools of talent through paid internship programs.

In business for 10 years, Career Edge has placed over 7,000 recent graduates and internationally qualified professionals in paid internship programs with more than 1,000 employers. As well, the organization’s Ability Edge program, focusing on placement of recent graduates who have disabilities, has also been successful.

Following these successes in Vancouver, Career Edge will be introducing a new program to GVRD employers in the first half of 2007: Career Bridge. Career Bridge connects employers to a pool of pre-screened, internationally qualified professionals.

"We are looking forward to the opportunities that Career Bridge will bring us in this intense and competitive hiring market," said Kim Kavanagh, manager, recruitment and training, RBC Financial Group, which is anticipating the introduction of Career Bridge after its success with Career Edge. "We expect Career Bridge to help us reach candidates from other countries who will bring valuable skills and experience to our organization," she continued.

Programs like those that Career Bridge offers will alleviate some of the hiring pressures hitting B.C., while giving a leg up to new graduates and people who are new to Canada.

Colleen Fleming is the president and CEO of Career Edge Organization. For more information, visit www.careeredge.ca.
