The invasion of Ukraine has deeply affected us all, both globally and personally, and our hearts continue to go out to those who are suffering. One of the tragic results of this conflict has been that millions of Ukrainians have been suddenly displaced from their homes. As a result, Canada is expected to receive 50,000 Ukrainians in the weeks to come, with an estimated 10,000 people anticipated to arrive here in British Columbia.
United Way British Columbia (UWBC) supports local communities and strengthens the vital connections that make them healthy; this includes newcomers seeking safety and belonging. They are eager to ensure that displaced Ukrainians are welcomed with as much kindness and support as possible.
A variety of programs and essential supports will be critical in helping Ukrainian people settle into our communities, and so UWBC has partnered with the Province of British Columbia, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and other community partners to bring together the power of many in support of these new arrivals.
UWBC is offering several ways that individuals and businesses can help:
1. Through UWBC's newly integrated bc211 service, a special support line has been established so that newly arrived Ukrainians can receive help in their own language as they navigate available services. Employers can call the bc211 to offer employment opportunities for those arriving from Ukraine.
2. UWBC is seeking compassionate British Columbians who would like to volunteer to help or donate goods or services.
3. A special United for Ukraine Fund has been set for those who would like to donate toward these efforts.
Many B.C.-based organizations have already stepped forward with offers to help ranging from food gift cards to health insurance.
