"To receive an award named after Dr. [Don] Rix and share the platform with a company built by Dr. Norman Keevil tells me that somehow I am punching above my weight,” said Peter M. Brown, founder and honourary chair of Canaccord Financial Inc., at The Vancouver Board of Trade's 2012 Governors' Banquet and Rix Center Awards.
“These are two of B.C.'s most exceptional citizens, greatest mentors and strongest supporters of free enterprise government. Even my family and closest friends can't understand how I ended up sharing the platform with them."
Brown was this year’s recipient of The Rix Award for Engaged Community Citizenship, in recognition of his leadership in the financial and investment sectors, his time and dedication as a volunteer, and his service and commitment to the community.
The Vancouver Board of Trade held its annual Governors' Banquet and Rix Centre Awards on April 30. This highly-anticipated premiere black-tie affair, which took place at the Vancouver Convention Centre, was presented by Canaccord Financial and The Jim Pattison Group.
Teck Resources Ltd. was also honoured at this event with The Rix Award for Engaged Corporate Citizenship. The Vancouver-based mining company received the award for demonstrating, both in policy and practice, the highest standards of stewardship toward the long-term well-being of customers, employees, owners, business partners, the environment and the broader community.
This high-profile gala was attended by leaders from business, government and industry to witness the induction of the Immediate Past Chair into the Council of Governors. This year, the Council of Governors, a prestigious group comprised of past Vancouver Board of Trade chairs welcomed Jason McLean, president and CEO of The McLean Group of Companies.
“My experiences at The Vancouver Board of Trade have shown me the power of positive engagement on a grand scale. From newly minted member to newly inducted Governor, I have been inspired, challenged, and mentored by some remarkable individuals,” said McLean.
He added, “The distinguished service records of my fellow Governors continues to set the bar on the high side, but I hear they’re a patient lot and I look forward to taking my place among them.”
Chris Gailus, News Hour Anchor at Global BC, was the Master of Ceremonies for this sold-out event. Guests attending the evening gala were treated to an incredible reception and dinner, as they took part in the auctions.
The Governor’s Banquet and Rix Centre Awards would not have been possible without the generous support of additional sponsors.
