2031

On May 1, 2025, the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade welcomed Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, President of the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), for a keynote and fireside conversation with GVBOT President and CEO Bridgitte Anderson. The event highlighted how BCIT is helping to build a more prosperous, inclusive, and innovative British Columbia by developing a future-ready workforce and strengthening the region’s economic foundations.

A Polytechnic with Province-Wide Impact

In his keynote remarks, Dr. Zabudsky shared how BCIT’s hands-on, industry-aligned education is uniquely positioned to meet B.C.’s workforce needs. With over 300 programs, five campuses, and more than 40,000 students enrolled each year, BCIT plays a crucial role in preparing professionals for high-demand careers across sectors ranging from skilled trades to clean tech and biomanufacturing.

Supporting Growth That Works for Everyone

Throughout the discussion, themes of economic resilience, inclusive opportunity, and community benefit were front and centre. Dr. Zabudsky emphasized the importance of accessible education and upskilling pathways in a province that expects over one million job openings over the next decade—most of which will require post-secondary credentials.

BCIT’s flexible programming, which ranges from micro-credentials to master’s degrees, allows learners to build their skills step by step and respond quickly to shifts in the labour market. The institute is also leading in emerging fields such as mass timber construction, net-zero housing, and electric vehicle maintenance—areas that align with both economic growth and sustainability goals.

Immigration and Talent Development

When asked about the role of immigration in B.C.’s economy, Dr. Zabudsky was clear: “Newcomers are critical to our future.” BCIT not only welcomes international students but also works to support their integration into the workforce, helping them build careers that contribute meaningfully to the province’s prosperity.

He also spoke about BCIT’s efforts to recognize foreign credentials, streamline pathways into high-demand professions, and provide applied learning experiences that give newcomers a competitive edge.

Investing in Students, Strengthening Communities

The success of BCIT’s recently completed INSPIRE fundraising campaign - raising $131 million - is a reflection of the broad support for the institute’s mission. Projects funded through the campaign include new health science facilities, expanded trades training spaces, student housing, and bursaries to ensure no one is left behind.

At its core, BCIT is focused on student success. That means not only enrolling students but also supporting them through graduation and into meaningful careers—ultimately creating a stronger workforce and a stronger province.

A Call for Partnership

Dr. Zabudsky closed with a message to the business community: “We can’t do this alone.” Whether it’s joining an industry advisory committee, sponsoring applied research, hiring co-op students, or helping expand BCIT’s alumni network, there are many ways for businesses to help shape the next generation of talent.

As British Columbia looks to unlock new opportunities and navigate economic uncertainty, BCIT stands ready to help lead the way—one partnership at a time.
