VANCOUVER, B.C. — In response to the release of the B.C. Government’s economic plan, StrongerBC, Bridgitte Anderson, President and CEO of the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, made the following statement.
“The business community is aligned and committed to making progress on the central themes of StrongerBC - inclusive and clean growth. We are focused on increasing diversity and inclusion and ensuring that B.C. is positioned as an ESG (environmental, social, and governance) investment destination of choice.
“Developing and attracting the talent we need for the jobs of today and tomorrow is critical for B.C. businesses. With more than one million job openings expected in the next ten years, we welcome the government’s emphasis on skills training and the investment in a Trades and Technology Complex at BCIT and await further detail and collaboration on the Future Ready: Skills for the Jobs of Tomorrow Plan.
“We also welcome the investment in Indigenous economic development, which will help increase collaboration and promote economic opportunity. There is also promise in the forthcoming strategies announced for life sciences, manufacturing, goods movement, and agri-tech as well as increased efforts to diversify trade.
“However, while the plan usefully articulates what the government will measure, there is less detail on what actions in the plan will lead to more growth, a higher standard of living, and additional investment into our province. The pandemic has been challenging, especially for small and medium-sized firms struggling with lower sales, increased debt, and higher costs. We believe a long-term economic strategy also needs to focus on tax reform, regulatory policies, and the overall cost of doing business—issues the business community has long championed.
“British Columbia has what it takes to build a brighter future. As a small and open trading economy in an increasingly competitive world, we need all sectors, especially a dynamic and competitive private sector, running at full sail to raise the standard of living and fund the public services we all rely on.”
