Air Canada Shutdown Should Not Come to Pass

VANCOUVER, B.C. — With Air Canada flights already being cancelled due to a flight attendants labour dispute, and the possibility of a full shutdown on the horizon, Bridgitte Anderson, President and CEO of the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, issued the following statement:

“Air Canada moves more than 130,000 passengers every day and carries critical supplies, such as half of Canada’s pharmaceutical shipments. A work stoppage would strand travellers, disrupt supply chains, hit tourism hard, and weaken Canada’s position in the global economy.

Canada’s economy is facing significant economic headwinds, including Donald Trump’s damaging trade war. A prolonged halt in air service would further damage our economy.

We respect the right to collective bargaining, and strongly believe the best deals are those made at the bargaining table. But if a deal can’t be reached, Ottawa should be ready to utilize the tools at its disposal to protect the country’s economic stability and keep people and goods moving.”
