GVBOT Response to Federal Government Support Measures and Counter-Tariffs

“We support and applaud the federal government's swift action in introducing support measures for affected businesses and workers. These measures are a meaningful and welcome first step that recognizes the significant challenges many companies are facing.

President Trump has damaged one of the most successful economic partnerships in history, creating uncertainty that hurts businesses, workers, and consumers in both Canada and the United States. Small and medium-sized businesses across British Columbia are now forced to grapple with the results.

The uncertainty created by the size, scope, and rapidly evolving nature of these tariffs is a significant challenge. Many firms are still working to understand and assess the implications of the recently announced 50 per cent U.S. tariffs and Canada's proposed counter-tariffs. While we support a strong Canadian response, the reality is that both the U.S. tariffs and Canada's retaliatory measures will create new challenges for businesses given the economic integration.

While Canada responds to these challenges, governments must move with urgency to strengthen our economy. We call on all levels of government to redouble their efforts to support businesses and workers, while taking swift and robust action to remove internal trade barriers. We also urge the Government of British Columbia to reverse its planned expansion of the PST to services. We should leave no stone unturned in seeking ways to create stability, bolster our competitiveness, and grow our economy.”
