VANCOUVER, B.C.
— In response to the announcement by the Prime Minister of the designation of a new west coast pipeline as in the national interest, Bridgitte Anderson, President and CEO of the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, released the following statement:

“Recent geopolitical and trade disruptions have exposed the risks of Canada's dependence on too few export markets. To strengthen our economic security, Canada must expand its ability to get energy, resources, and other products to customers around the world. Designating a new west coast oil pipeline, Pacific Link, as a project of national interest would be an important step toward that goal.

“Pacific Link is also part of a broader opportunity to launch a new cycle of nation-building investment in Canada. Canada now has an opportunity to launch a new cycle of nation-building investment. The LNG Canada Phase 2 announcement demonstrates renewed confidence in major Canadian projects. That momentum is building in many areas across the economy, including critical mineral and mining projects, potash expansion, mine life extensions, and trade-enabling infrastructure such as Roberts Bank Terminal 2 and more. By advancing projects that connect Canadian products to global markets, we can attract investment, strengthen our competitiveness, and build a more resilient economy.

“Expanding our ability to reach customers across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond will support jobs, economic growth, and greater resilience against external shocks. Realizing this opportunity will require significant private-sector investment in Pacific Link and the broader portfolio of nation-building projects needed to support Canada's next phase of economic growth.

"At the same time, any project of this scale must be developed responsibly. Meaningful engagement and partnership with communities and First Nations along the proposed route and at the terminus will be essential. There is important work ahead to address community priorities, environmental considerations, and shared economic opportunities.”
